The Jaguars released Pryor on Saturday, Mike Kaye of FirstCoastNews.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pryor was traded to the Browns from the Jets in June, but was released prior to the season commencing after a reported altercation with a teammate. He subsequently landed with the Jaguars, but was placed on injured reserve in September with an ankle injury before being designated for a return and suiting up in the team's last two games. After failing to impress while seeing most of his snaps on special teams, the 2014 first-round pick will now look for a new opportunity.

Pryor surpassed 60 tackles during each of his three seasons with the Jets, but he became expendable after the team used a top-10 pick on fellow safety Jamal Adams, and was traded to the Browns in June. The versatile 25-year-old isn't a ballhawk, with just two career tallies in both the interception and forced fumble categories, but the former first-rounder has a chance to improve his stock in Cleveland among an inexperienced safety corps. He was on the field for a career-high 812 defensive snaps in 2016, but that number may be difficult to reach if the Browns elect to immediately use first-rounder Jabrill Peppers in the starting lineup. Pryor will be a free agent next year, so it will be a key season for him to solve the inconsistency issues that have plagued his career thus far.
After two unremarkable seasons to start his career, it's time for Pryor to redeem his status as a former first-round pick and come through with a breakout season. With the tutelage of coach Todd Bowles, who has an extensive background with defensive backs, there's no excuse for Pryor not to. His 130 tackles in two years were of no use to most IDP owners, but the fact he played only 1,393 defensive snaps illustrates subtle breakout potential. So long as he pushes for 1,000 snaps, his tackle rate over the last two years would project to 90 or more.
Pryor, who was a first-round draft pick in 2014, finished his rookie campaign with 61 tackles, 0.5 sacks, and two passes defensed in 16 games. He's slated to start at safety in 2015 as he looks for his first career interception.
The Jets surprisingly made Pryor the first safety selected in the 2014 draft, taking him 18th overall despite having the chance to take the more heralded Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. Given their major investment in him, the Jets will likely start Pryor from Day 1, with a strong chance he'll work in a three-down role. If Pryor can secure a full-time workload, he ought to get on the IDP radar right away. He's a pure strong safety with good range and hitting ability, and he should have the chance to make big plays in a Jets defense that knows how to create pressure. Dawan Landry made 100 tackles as a starter last year, and Pryor just might be able to get his hands on most of those tackles this year.
