ANALYSIS
Murphy hasn't officially retired from football, despite failing to secure even a training-camp invite from an NFL team in 2018. A strong showing in the AAF could improve Murphy's odds of resurfacing in the NFL, but at 31 years old, his clock is ticking.

The veteran wideout's 2015 campaign came to an abrupt end in Week 6, when he suffered an ACL injury. Murphy had shown some down-the-field chemistry with then-rookie Jameis Winston, as he was able to generate a career-best 19.8 yards per reception, and catches of 33 and 54 yards. The 29-year-old certainly has experience on his side in the battle for the third receiver job that will unfold this summer, as those expected to be his main challengers—Donteaa Dye, Adam Humphries, Evan Spencer and Kenny Bell—are all entering their second year. Murphy is expected to be ready to join the fray by the onset of training camp, giving him an opportunity to retain the role he started last season in.
Murphy caught just 31 passes for 380 yards in 11 games in 2014 before his season was cut short by an ankle injury. Overshadowed by Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson, Murphy was not featured prominently in an anemic Bucs' offense last season, but managed to scrape together a fair amount of receptions despite being the third or fourth option in the passing game. The additions of two rookie wide receivers (Kenny Bell and Kaelin Clay) and the continued improvement of Russell Shepard may nullify any gains that would be made through improved quarterback play with the addition of Jameis Winston, but Murphy still stands a chance at the No. 3 spot on the Buccaneers’ wide receiver depth chart.
The vagabond is on his fourth team in four years, and will provide depth for a Bucs receiving corps that's unproven behind Vincent Jackson.
Murphy will likely serve as the Giants' fourth receiver behind Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks and Rueben Randle. Domenik Hixon and Ramses Barden have both had brief moments of relevance as depth receivers for the Giants in the past, but Murphy is unlikely to get enough playing time to make an impact on any predictable basis.
Traded by the Raiders to the Panthers in July, Murphy goes from one crowded, but not overly talented, wide receiver depth chart to another, aside from Steve Smith. He has the tools to be a solid complement, although he has a tremendous injury history that continues to slow him down. Brandon LaFell and David Gettis are ahead of him for the spot opposite Steve Smith, but his speed could get him a few long balls from the strong arm of Cam Newton.
Murphy had a passable second season insofar as one can in Oakland with 41 catches, 7.8 YPT and 14.9 YPC. The problem is the Raiders rely primarily on the run, get the ball to tight end Zach Miller and spread it erratically among their receivers. Murphy, Jacoby Ford, Chaz Schilens and even Darrius Heyward-Bey are all in the mix, and it's unclear which will be the lead dog. At 6-2, 203, Murphy has a good size/speed combo, and he's got a knack for the big play.
As a rookie, Murphy showed good deep skills, ran clean routes, and laid a couple of impressive blocks that helped him gain favor with the coaching staff. However, he's still stuck behind Chaz Schilens and Darrius Heyward-Bey on the depth chart. As the third receiver, his fantasy production will be limited; but if either of the two starters misses any action, Murphy could have some fantasy value now that the Raiders have a quarterback who can actually get him the ball.
Murphy is a speedy receiver who gives JaMarcus Russell another weapon to throw to. Murphy will likely challenge for playing time at either the Raiders' third or fourth receiver position.
