RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2016

There was no outlook written for Marcus Sherels.

2015

Sherels had just eight tackles last year as he was almost exclusively used as a punt returner. With the Vikings acquiring more talent in the secondary, Sherels may have a hard time justifying his roster spot on punt return duties alone. However, he was 7th in punt return yards per attempt, so he'll likely retain the job if he can remain as productive.

2014

While Sherels posted a rather modest tackle total (46) and failed to record an interception last season, he did bat away seven passes and was a factor in the punt-return game as well. He'll return to the Vikings next season and figures to play a similar reserve defensive back and special teams role in new coach Mike Zimmer's defense.

2013

Sherels will compete for a reserve defensive back role and to retain the job as Minnesota's punt returner. While Sherels isn't explosive, he consistently catches punts. He also improved last season in both his average return yardage (9.0 from 8.4) and scored a touchdown on a return. He doesn't get much playing time as a defensive back, so his fantasy value is limited to leagues that count return yardage.

2012

Sherels, an undrafted free agent from the University of Minnesota, started three games at cornerback and got significant time in the secondary. He also became Minnesota's primary punter returner and also handled kickoffs. He could have a similar reserve secondary role again this year, but he wasn't explosive on returns (just a 8.4 average) and could easily lose the return roles.
