After Ray Rice struggled to find open running lanes this past season, look for the Ravens to make upgrading the offensive line a priority in the draft.

Bernard Pierce: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said that Pierce (shoulder) is expected to be ready for the first day of training camp, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Pierce underwent surgery to repair his rotator cuff in late January, after struggling through a lousy season behind a borderline-incompetent offensive line. With Ray Rice coming off an equally disappointing season and now facing a domestic violence charge, the Ravens' backfield -- perceived as a strength heading into 2013 -- looks more than a little shaky. The team doesn't seem to have any intention of releasing Rice, as such an action would actually increase the running back's 2014 cap hit by $5.5 million. However, the NFL (or the Ravens) may decide to suspend Rice, and things don't look too good for the veteran running back given that the police reportedly have footage of him knocking his fiancee unconscious. With so much going on in terms of performance issues, off-the-field problems and injuries, it's hard to get a good read on the running back situation in Baltimore. Assuming his recovery goes as planned, Pierce may have the opportunity to take on an expanded role in 2014, on the heels of a 152-carry season. He produced a meager 2.9 yards per carry in 2013 after gaining 4.9 YPC (523 yards on 108 rushes) as a rookie in 2012. Pierce has the size-speed combination to be a starter in the NFL, but he's a mediocre receiver and isn't particularly elusive.

Pierce is expected to undergo offseason surgery to repair a damaged rotator cuff, with the recovery time from the procedure estimated at four-to-five months, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

It sounds like the final decision hasn't been made but is trending strongly in the direction of having the procedure. According to the early estimate, Pierce would have time to get healthy for training camp, though the timetable is long enough that any setback could threaten his availability. With both Pierce and Ray Rice trying to bounce back from lackluster 2013 campaigns, the Baltimore running game will be worth keeping an eye on.
Pierce finished the 2013 season with 436 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 152 carries, adding 20 receptions for 104 yards.

2012

The Ravens spent the 84th pick in the draft on Pierce, who ran for 1,481 yards and 27 touchdowns during his junior year of college. He has good balance and a nose for the end zone but lacks skills as a receiver and isnít overly quick. Baltimore hopes he can replace Ricky Williams as the teamís backup, and while that job wonít entail much if Ray Rice stays healthy, it could have plenty of potential if Rice were to go down. Pierce is an intriguing late round flier.
