Barber worked out for the Dolphins on Tuesday, Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Barber apparently looked good in his workout. The Dolphins want to evaluate their current group of players before considering signing him, but the positive reaction to his first workout may be the portent of a signing somewhere.

While other backs got more attention, Barber quietly put together one of the best performances of all-time last season. His 1,860 yards rushing in 2005 fell just short of knocking Jim Brown from 10th place on the single season rushing list, and his 2,390 yards from scrimmage rank second all-time, behind only Marshall Faulk’s 2,429 in 1999. Barber’s fantasy owners probably wished he’d gotten into the end zone a little more often (he had nine rushing touchdowns and 11 TDs total), but by just about any measure, Barber’s season was a great one. Physically, he’s still what he always seemed to be coming out of college, a small guy, generously listed at 5-10, 200, playing a big man’s game. What separates Barber from other small, shifty backs is not his speed or elusiveness but his toughness. He’s proven over the last few seasons that he can take a pounding and shoulder a starting RB’s workload without breaking down (he hasn’t missed a game since 2001) or wearing out (last year he exploded for two 200-plus yard rushing days in the final three weeks) over the course of a full season. His pass-catching skills (over the past six years he’s averaged 75 catches for 577 yards) are as good or better than those of any back in the game, which helps offset his unexceptional red-zone numbers. Barber still gets comparable touches – 135 over the last two seasons – and has scored 20 red-zone touchdowns over that stretch, but Brandon Jacobs (7-for-16 conversion rate inside the 5) stole some looks from him in close last year, and will likely do so again. Barber is far more valuable in yardage leagues than in scoring ones, but he’s earned his place near the top of the first round in most fantasy formats.
After scoring three touchdowns in 2003, Barber came out of nowhere to score 15 a year ago and led the NFL in yards from scrimmage with 2,096. And despite being considered too small to be a goal-line back, Barber stepped in when Ron Dayne faltered and converted 10 of 15 carries from inside the 5 for touchdowns, giving him the best success rate in the NFL. Barber also worked to hold the ball more securely and cut his fumbles from nine to five. Barber, who attributes some of his success in 2004 to a rigorous offseason weight program, put on 15 pounds of muscle without losing his quickness or breakaway speed. Barber can run between the tackles or burst to the outside, and he’s an excellent cutback runner, capable of changing directions quickly and fluidly. Barber is also an excellent receiver with good route-running ability and soft hands. In fact, last season’s 52 catches was the first time since 2000 he had less than 69. While the addition of Plaxico Burress, the continuing maturation of Eli Manning and the expected improvement of the offensive line should help the Giants offense as a unit this season, drafting 6-4, 267-pound Brandon Jacobs, who likely will handle much of the goal-line carries, could cost Barber most of his touchdowns. Jacobs also might spell Barber occasionally to reduce his workload. With the 30-year-old Barber cracking the 1,500-career-carry mark late last season, the Giants want to make sure their diminutive back has a good chance of making it through another season intact.
New Giants coach Tom Coughlin hates one thing even more than facial hair, practicing in shorts and casual attire on road trips: fumbling. Barber has laid it on the ground 17 times the past two seasons. We’re betting Coughlin is going to look at that stat and find a reason to reduce Barber’s workload and pull Ron Dayne out of lost and found. Barber was consistently effective despite the Giants poor line play last year, but he’s an unreliable goal-line option (12-for-45 in converting his inside-the-10 runs since 2002). The Giants were also 26th last year in converting short-yardage runs. Combine those stats with his fumbling. and it’s hard to envision a scenario where Barber will generate enough TDs to be a reliable fantasy starter.
While Barber was a joy to own for anyone who rode shotgun with his career year last season, we have doubts that his 5-10, 200-pound body can withstand another 304-carry campaign. Barber lugged the mail just 166 and 213 times the two previous years, and he wasn't efficient as a goal-line back at the end of last year (even though he did score 11 times in 2002), so there's certainly a sound argument as to why his role could be mildly scaled back this time around. Make no mistake, New York coach Jim Fassel is a Barber fan all the way, and it's not like Dorsey Levens or Ron Dayne is poised to take Barber's featured status away. We simply advise you not to pay the full sticker price on Barber. He's a solid choice in the second or third round, but don't spend your first-round pick on him.
