As the Steelers' OTAs began earlier this week, Wheaton worked with the team's starters, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

While the 2013 third-rounder caught just six passes as a rookie, with Emmanuel Sanders no longer in the mix, Wheaton will now have a chance to secure a starting split end assignment opposite Antonio Brown. To do so, he'll have to hold off the likes of Darrius Heyward-Bey and draftee Martavis Bryant, however. "There are a lot of us chasing that spot," Wheaton noted. "Its not mine. There's a lot of good competition."
Following the free agent departures of Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery, Wheaton has a chance to secure a larger role in the Steelers' offense this coming season, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Wheaton hopes to avoid the injuries that plagued him during his rookie year and wants to play a greater role in Pittsburgh's offense next season, according to the Steelers' official website. "I felt every time I took a couple of steps forward there was a setback with an injury," said Wheaton. "Hopefully in 2014 there aren't as many setbacks so I can continue to progress."

2013

There's a lot of talk about Tavon Austin and DeAndre Hopkins, but it's possible Wheaton stepped into the best situation in Year 1. While Emmanuel Sanders is the favorite to start opposite Antonio Brown, that's not set in stone, and the Steelers often involve a third receiver, going back to the days when Nate Washington and Mike Wallace emerged in that role. At 5-11, 187 and with good speed, Wheaton is very much like Brown and Sanders small, quick, shifty, hard to keep up with in open space. Moreover, Ben Roethlisberger often keeps plays alive with his scrambling, so there are usually a few big gains to be had even when a receiver isn't open initially.
