Lands on practice squad injured list

The Jets placed Brown (hip) on the practice squad injured list Tuesday, Ethan Greenberg of the team's official website reports.
ANALYSIS
After he was elevated from the practice squad in advance of Week 17, Brown played just 12 snaps and finished with two receptions for 29 yards in Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Buccaneers before departing with the hip injury. He reverted to the practice squad following the game and won't be available for the Jets' season finale against the Bills this weekend while he recovers from the injury. New York is expected to get top tight end Tyler Kroft back from the reserve/COVID-19 list for the Week 18 matchup, so the loss of Brown shouldn't prove too consequential.

Brown has 74 games of NFL experience under his belt but has spent the vast majority of his career in a special teams role, having caught just 44 passes and two touchdowns. The veteran tight end will try to secure a role with the Jets in camp, but Brown figures to feature almost exclusively on special teams if he makes the team.
Brown has the inside track on a roster spot as a depth piece, but he's a non-factor in the passing game, with only 42 catches in 58 career NFL games. The 6-5 tight end was put on the non-football injury list in July, but it's unclear what the nature of his injury is and whether it will affect his availability this season.
Brown is a blocking tight end who will be fighting an uphill battle just to make the Jets' roster, though his case is helped by the fact that starter Chris Herndon will be suspended for the first four weeks of the season. With just 35 catches and one touchdown in 42 career NFL appearances, Brown is unlikely to have any impact in the fantasy realm.
Brown played a career-high 14 games for the Bears last year, though he saw just 242 offensive snaps while catching 13 passes for 129 yards. In four NFL seasons, he has a total of 317 yards and one touchdown, so he's yet to emerge as a consistent receiving threat. Since he was a contributor on special teams last year, he should make the roster while being no better than the Bears fourth tight end, and with the addition of Trey Burton to the roster, he'll struggle to see much opportunity to contribute as a receiver.
Once the Bears lost Zach Miller to a foot injury in Week 11 last year, the Bears turned to the 2015 undrafted free agent to take over as the primary receiving tight end. Unfortunately, Brown surpassed 24 yards just a single time in those six games, and sensing a need at tight end, Chicago signed Dion Sims to a free-agent deal before adding Adam Shaheen in the second round of the 2017 draft. With Brown returning on a one-year contract, he'll enter training camp near the bottom of the depth chart, where his roster spot may be in peril. Even if he sticks around, though, it's unlikely he'll see enough targets over the course of the season to be a reliable fantasy option.
