Shifting to baseball
QBFree Agent
June 14, 2020
Hackenberg is attempting to begin a career in professional baseball, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2016 second-round pick by the Jets hasn't been on an NFL roster since August 2018, and he never played a snap during his time with New York or the Raiders. Hackenberg also played in the Alliance of American Football before it was shuttered, but he was benched after three starts. He's unlikely to make a return to football at this point, but he'll attempt to continue his athletic career on the diamond.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
A 2016 second-round pick, Hackenberg entered training camp with a chance to compete against Josh McCown and Bryce Petty for the starting role in New York. McCown ultimately won the job, though he seems to be simply a caretaker until either of the youngsters are ready to grab the mantle (if they grab the mantle). That could be Hackenberg, though he couldn't get on the field last year even as the Jets cycled through three quarterbacks, including Petty, who kept getting hurt. Hackenberg has a strong arm, but accuracy problems followed him from college to the NFL, and this year he must learn a new offense again with the arrival of coordinator John Morton. Hackenberg got good reviews in May OTAs, but he was vastly outplayed by Petty during the preseason.
Drafted in the second round of this year's draft, Hackenberg is not expected to compete for a starting job unless the Jets fail to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick. Hackenberg had serious accuracy issues in college, but he has a strong arm and some excellent receivers who could make him look a bit better. His fantasy upside is obviously dependent on the Fitzpatrick situation, though even if that doesn't resolve itself, Geno Smith will likely get every opportunity to win the starting job in training camp.
