Groin
October 8, 2008
Gramatica (groin) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday and will miss the rest of the season, the Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Gramatica has struggled all season, making just 6-of-10 field goals on the year. His poor performance likely has as much to do with him being placed on injured reserve as his groin injury, which he has been able to play through the last several games. The Saints replaced Gramatica on the active roster with Taylor Mehlhaff, a rookie whom the Saints drafted in the sixth round this year but who was released prior to the start of the regular season.

Gramatica kicked in just three games last season for the Saints but made all 13 of his kicks, including 5-of-5 field goal attempts. Considering Gramatica's past, however, fantasy owners should pay attention to any competition in training camp. The Saints got their offense going in the second half of 2007, after struggling early, but were last in field goals made (15). Expect this to improve but probably not enough to warrant drafting Gramatica. Moreover, sixth round draft pick Taylor Mehlhaff could push Gramatica for the job with a strong camp
Gramatica signed a two-year contract, making him the kicker in Dallas for now, though the Cowboys drafted Nick Folk in the sixth round. The Cowboys scored 49 touchdowns, one more than the Colts in 2006. Dallas also has plenty of offensive weapons with Tony Romo, Julius Jones, Marion Barber, Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens. Gramatica was 7-of-9 last season, but did not kick in 2005 and was just 27-of-45 in 2003-2004. Despite team’s weapons, Gramatica does not have the leg nor the accuracy to succeed long term.
Gramatica, who did not miss a kick last season -- because he was out of the league -- was brought in by the Patriots to compete with fourth-round selection Stephen Gostkowski to fill the void created by the departure of Adam Vinatieri. The rookie held his own and Gramatica was released in August.
After being released by the Buccaneers, Gramatica will handle kickoffs for the Colts.
Gramatica set career highs for field goals attempted and made (32 of 39) in 2002. He turned that into a career-best 128 points, including 5 of 6 (13 of 20 career) from beyond the 50. We're wary of the Tampa Bay offense, but Gramatica should be good for 109 points. His game got much better last season after Ryan Benjamin was brought in to snap to him in October.
