Ferguson looks like he'll enter the season as Minnesota's fifth wideout. He should be avoided on draft day as he has several hurdles to jump before he could see consistent playing time, and even then would have to prove he could produce.
Ferguson had yet another injury plagued season in 2006, and has never really fit into that slot receiver role the Packers were hoping he would when they drafted him in 2001. He changed his jersey number from 89 to 87, maybe to channel the wide-out skills of late-90s Packer great Robert Brooks. That didn't prevent him from being cut by Green Bay however.
Ferguson comes into the 2006 season with a chance to start opposite Donald Driver at wide receiver. He's never lived up to the potential that made him a second round pick in 2001 and may get passed over by Rod Gardner and rookie Greg Jennings this season.
Ferguson's 2004 season ended a few games early after he suffered a neck injury. He's healthy now and will resume his role as the third WR in the Green Bay offense. He would love to get more passes thrown his direction, but that won't happen without an injury to Javon Walker or Donald Driver.
Packers coaches speak highly of Ferguson, but didn’t demonstrate this satisfaction with their play-calling. Although Ferguson caught a team-high 64 percent of the passes thrown his way, he understandably expressed frustration last year over that relatively paltry target total (59). There’s some upside here, as Ferguson came on in the second half and playoffs.
