RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Mike Rumph.
Rumph will compete for the nickelback and dimeback jobs with Lenny Walls, Ron Bartell, and rookie Jonathan Wade.
Rumph is expected to challenge for the 4th cornerback spot on the Rams in 2007.
Missed most of last season with a broken right forearm and switching in 2005 from right cornerback to free safety to take advantage of his ability to pick up receivers in coverage and tackle. Could make the Pro Bowl if he is able to make the transition.
After a disappointing rookie season, Rumph made major strides in 2003 and looked like the player he was in college. He finished with 55 tackles, two sacks, and three interceptions and will start at right cornerback again this season. One thing to watch is how he will be impacted by the stricter calling of pass interference downfield as he was one of those DBs who used to make significant contact with the receiver.
Rumph struggled tremendously in 2002 losing his job at times to ineffectiveness. Rumph played much better after moving into the slot and many scouts believe he is better suited to play safety, as opposed to his current cornerback position, in the NFL. Rumph will be the 49ers nickel back and may start at RCB if Jason Webster is slow to recover from off-season ankle surgery.
