Scaife, whose recent stint with the Patriots was short-lived, struggled with conditioning during the practices that he participated in, the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Scaife didn't play last year, so it's not all that surprising that he wasn't sharp, but in order to stick with another team going forward, it looks like he'll need to re-prove his fitness.

Scaife endured a disappointing season last year as a groin injury and the emergence of Jared Cook limited his production. Cook came on in the second half of the season, totaling 292 yards in the last six weeks; Scaife had 37 yards during that span, playing in only four games (though he scored twice). Scaife doesn’t possess blazing speed but has the ability to go up in traffic and win the ball. With Cook's emergence, the Titans allowed Scaife to walk and he signed a one-year contract with the Bengals to back up Jermaine Gresham. As a backup to a pass-catching tight end, Scaife's fantasy value is greatly diminished.
Coming off a career year, Scaife was knocked off stride last year by an early season knee injury. By midseason, though, he was back to form with the return of Vince Young at quarterback. Prorating his last 10 weeks over 16 games would give him comparable numbers to 2008. Scaife signed a one-year deal in the offseason to remain in Tennessee where Jared Cook still is viewed as the tight end of the future. How much that will cost Scaife this season remains to be seen, but tight ends don’t get paid $4.9 million to sit plays out. Scaife’s lack of touchdowns — just one in 13 red-zone targets — is a fantasy problem, but perhaps a full season with Young can help that issue.
Despite the signing of Alge Crumpler, Scaife set a career high in both receptions (58) and yardage (562). However, the Titans drafted Jared Cook and did not make a long-term offer to Scaife. Cook will take away targets from both Crumpler and Scaife, though Scaife will remain the best fantasy option of the trio. On a positive note, without the long-term deal he was seeking, Scaife will be motivated to produce. Tennessee remains a run-first offense, so similar production to last season’s is probably the best that should be expected out of Scaife.
Scaife was one of Vince Young's favorite targets last season, but with the acquisition of Alge Crumpler, expect Scaife's numbers to drop substantially.
With Tennessee losing two wideouts to free agency, and David Givens (knee) not expected to be ready to start the season, the tight end position might be the primary receiving threat for Vince Young. Scaife led all returning Titans receivers with 29 catches in 2006 and was better than league average with 12 red-zone targets.
Scaife showed that he has skills at tight end, but as the team's third stringer behind Erron Kinney and Ben Troupe, Scaife's production will be too inconsistent to count on in fantasy leagues (barring injury issues).
Scaife will start the season behind both Erron Kinney and Ben Troupe on the depth chart at tight end.
