Mike Bell: Cut by Lions
RBDetroit Lions
August 29, 2011
Bell was released by the Lions on Monday, the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Bell always was a long shot to stick in a Detroit backfield that is a bit crowded, though muddled, behind Jahvid Best. The fact that he missed an opportunity Saturday by sitting out against the Pats couldn't have helped his cause.

Bell was added to the Lions' roster in the wake of Mikel Leshoure's season-ending Achilles injury. He'll face an uphill battle to latch on as the Lions' third running back.
Bell somehow got 172 undeserved carries for the Saints last year, and despite playing for the league’s best offense, managed just 3.8 YPC and was once again a complete non-factor in the passing game. The undrafted back is again on the radar because he’s found himself in yet another good situation in Philadelphia. He should be the clear backup to LeSean McCoy, but it’s not a certainty, and Bell is likely the goal-line favorite too. He has no discernible skills, yet has played for the Broncos, Saints and now Eagles — all three terrific situations to put up big stats, so his agent deserves some kudos.
Bell is in competition for the third running back position on the Saints' roster behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush. He is currently the front-runner. If he wins the spot, he will likely serve as a short-yardage specialist, a role in which he has thrived in the past. With the Saints lacking a proven between-the-tackles runner, Bell could receive some carries and possibly even a few touchdowns.
Bell, who had 677 yards rushing and eight touchdowns in 2006, is now the backup fullback behind Cecil Sapp.
Year after year, coach Mike Shanahan makes an unknown running back relevant to the fantasy world, and in 2006, it was Bell. An undrafted free agent, Bell was named Denver’s starter before the season began. He started only three games but was relevant for far more often than that, as Tatum Bell kept fumbling away opportunities. Mike Bell was given 17 goal-line carries last year, good for eighth in the league. He converted eight into touchdowns, but his 2007 fantasy value took a major hit when Travis Henry signed with Denver. While anything is possible with Shanahan, Henry should be the Broncos starter as long as he’s healthy. Still, any No. 2 running back in Denver’s system is well worth drafting in fantasy leagues.
Bell, an undrafted rookie free agent out of Arizona, entered training camp fourth on the depth chart behind Ron Dayne, Tatum Bell, and Cedric Cobbs. Bell, a Denver native, has been a fan favorite early in training camp, and has been very impressive as well. His shifty and elusive running style has earned him the top spot on the Broncos' RB chart early in camp. While that can change at any point, coach Mike Shanahan has been a master at getting a lot out of unknown backs in the past, so we should take Bell's chances to earn significant playing time seriously.
