Beck will compete for the third string quarterback job with rookie draft pick Case Keenum. Beck has operated a similar passing offense in Washington, so he should be able to step right in. Beyond Matt Schaub, the Texans are awfully young at quarterback, which might give Beck the upper hand.
Beck starts 2011 atop the Redskins depth chart. The team heads into the season with Beck, Kellen Clemens and Rex Grossman on the roster after sending Donovan McNabb to the Vikings for two sixth-round draft picks. Head Coach Mike Shanahan has stated he always liked Beck dating back to the 2007 draft. Beck has only five games of experience under his belt and has a lot to prove heading into 2011. Nevertheless, with the competition in camp, Beck is expected to be the starter in Washington in 2011.
The best Beck can hope for is earning the No. 3 spot on the depth chart behind Joe Flacco and Marc Bulger.
Beck will compete with Troy Smith for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Unless starter Joe Flacco is injured, Beck will not see the field except in garbage time.
The Dolphins appreciate how hard Beck has worked throughout the offseason, but the quarterback competition is wide open, to be decided by performance in training camp and preseason games. Cam Cameron liked Beck's smarts, and he's worked on his release point to cut down on his throws being batted down. If he wins the starting job, though, expect some growing pains. Beck will be 27 when the season starts, but he's only in his second year, and, while the offensive line has improved talent-wise, it features some young players and will need time to gel. He'd be good for 15 TDs and probably an equal or greater number of picks if he starts the whole season, but he'll be on a short leash with strong-armed rookie Chad Henne waiting in the wings. At this point, Beck's no more than a low-end bye-week replacement if he does start.
Coach Cam Cameron loves the consistency, accuracy, and smarts of second-round pick John Beck. In the weeks after the draft, when the Dolphins were still trying frantically to dump Daunte Culpepper and trade for Trent Green, there was speculation that Beck could get a chance to start at some point in 2007. Now, with Culpepper gone and Green the starter, it appears Miami will be able to bring Beck along a little more slowly. He currently sits behind both Green and Cleo Lemon on the depth chart, but if the Dolphins fall as irreparably behind as they did in 2006, however, Beck could see some action before season's end.
