Selvin Young: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Young moved down the Broncos' depth chart after the team selected Knowshon Moreno with the No. 12 pick in the draft Saturday.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

It is unclear how many touches the running backs will get in new head coach Josh McDaniels' system, but it's clear the team is stockpiling running backs after losing seven of them to injury last season. While Young was a starter last season, he is quickly being surpassed by more talented backs on the depth chart.

RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2013

There was no outlook written for Selvin Young.

2008

Young was solid in relief work last year, averaging 5.2 YPC on 140 rushing attempts. He's got good size and speed and hits the hole with authority. Still, there's some question as to whether Young's body is built to carry a full workload, and coach Mike Shanahan has stated Young's ideally suited for 10-to-15 touches per game. However, Young added seven pounds of muscle this offseason, and Shanahan has changed his tune, suggesting Young could be the team's primary ballcarrier after the release of Travis Henry. Young is also an effective receiver out of the backfield, but he struggled in short-yardage situations, going 0-for-7 at the goal line in 2007. Rookie Ryan Torain is a better option from in close and will get a serious opportunity to win the feature role, though he's also injury-prone. This is likely going to be a timeshare, but if one of the two were to emerge as the lone feature back, he'd have top-15 upside.

2007

The Broncos utilized undrafted rookie free agent Mike Bell heavily in 2006, and while Young, the undrafted rookie out of Texas, won't see that type of playing time, he does appear to have a great shot of making the Broncos' roster. The Broncos don't have a ton of depth behind Travis Henry and Bell, so Young should have a shot at being the Broncos No. 3 tailback. He could have to compete with fullback Cecil Sapp for that role, as Sapp saw some action at halfback during the offseason.
