Flynn will look to add veteran depth to a team's depth chart at QB. In the right system, he is a serviceable backup option.
Flynn was released by both the Raiders and the Bills in less than a month-long span last season before he ultimately returned for a second stint in Green Bay to provide emergency help at quarterback as Aaron Rodgers was sidelined with a collarbone injury. Given his familiarity with the Packers' offense, Flynn ushered the team through a trying back end of the season, throwing for 1,146 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions in five games. To avoid another suddenly desperate situation, the Packers re-signed Flynn this offseason to stand on-call should a second-stringer need to be played.
The Raiders are in some trouble. Flynn figures to be their opening day starter, but Oakland really did nothing to help its new quarterback. The Raiders still have Darren McFadden in the backfield, but they're weak on the outside. Denarius Moore is their top wide receiver, and there's a good chance you've never heard of any of their tight ends. One thing Flynn has going for him is the Raiders are likely to be losing so often that he could throw 600 passes, assuming he doesn't get hurt. The return of diminutive playmaker Jacoby Ford could also help.
Flynn’s ceiling-to-floor gap is probably exceeded only by that of Jake Locker. He was impressive as a backup in Green Bay the last two years, throwing for 951 yards (8.3 YPA), nine touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 63.5 percent of his passes, but he’ll be a big risk until he proves he wasn’t a product of the Green Bay system. The Seattle offensive line is young and struggled with injuries last year, and Flynn’s top wideout (Sidney Rice) has been active for just 15 games the last two seasons. Essentially, Flynn passed the baseline test of playing well in a short sample in an ideal offensive environment for quarterbacks. It remains to be seen what he’ll do as the team’s likely starter – at press time Tarvaris Jackson isn’t totally out of the running – in a below average one.
When you are the backup to arguably the best quarterback in football, your fantasy expectations are extremely low. With Aaron Rodgers ahead of Flynn on the Packers' depth chart, not much is expected of him. With that being said, Rodgers has a history of concussions, so there is always a chance that Flynn could see some action.
Flynn will be the primary back up to Aaron Rodgers.
As a seventh-round pick last year, Flynn surprised plenty of onlookers by edging out the more highly touted Brian Brohm, Green Bay's second-round selection, for the backup job behind Aaron Rodgers. The two will engage in a similar competition in training camp this season.
Flynn has a chance to make the team as a third string QB, but may end up on the practice squad.
