RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014

There was no outlook written for Matt Stover.

2008

Stover continues to produce despite turning 40, but was betrayed by a Ravens offense that scored just 28 touchdowns. The Ravens were bad on offense, which ultimately led to coach Brian Billick's firing. New coach John Harbaugh takes over, but with the prospect of Kyle Boller or rookie Joe Flacco opening at quarterback for the Ravens, and Willis McGahee a year older, things aren't likely to get too much better. The one bright spot is that Stover has had at least 30 fieldgoal attempts in each of the last five seasons with at least 27 conversions each season. Don't expect many from long range, though – just 1-of-2 the last two years combined from 50-plus.

2007

The Ravens improved their offense with Steve McNair jumping from 23 to 37 touchdowns last year, and Willis McGahee should be a mild upgrade over the plodding Jamal Lewis. Stover has a history of reliable production, having been in the Top 10 in kicker scoring the past four seasons, including leading the NFL in field goal accuracy at 93.3 percent last year – not surprising considering he has not been

2006

The Ravens offense continues to disappoint, but that’s not Stover’s fault. He averaged 112.4 points in his last five seasons and is routinely above average in FGA. At 86.9 percent, the 15-year veteran is the league’s most accurate kicker over the past five seasons, and has not been below 84 percent since 1998.

2005

Stover’s success flies in the face of conventional wisdom about fantasy kickers. The Ravens offense has been notoriously weak, but good enough to give Stover 32.3 FGA the last four seasons. With a league-leading 86.9 conversion percentage over that span, Stover has generated fantasy value despite the offense’s limits. The team made strides in the offseason to punch up the passing game – signing Derrick Mason and drafting Oklahoma’s Mark Clayton. Any improvement on offense enhances Stover’s value.

2004

Stover really could be ranked higher after averaging 116.6 points and an 86.1 percent field goal percentage in the last five years. The question with Stover will be the Baltimore passing offense, which ranked last in 2003. Jamal Lewis and the running game can only generate so many opportunities on their own, and kickers, no matter how good, are highly dependent upon their respective offensive units.

2003

The 12-year veteran has averaged 102.5 points per season in his career and has hit 81.6 percent. The Ravens offense limited his production to 96 points and 25 field goal attempts in 2002. Stover has been extremely accurate in the last four seasons, making 86 percent (110 of 128), so reliability shouldn't be a concern. Unfortunately, we don't see the Ravens increasing Stover's scoring opportunities. Expect between 95 and 100 points.
