Coutu filled a rare role last season, that of backup kicker. Why the Seahawks found it necessary to waste a roster spot on a backup kicker remains a mystery, but they must really like Coutu to keep handing him a check while giving all the field goal attempts to Olindo Mare. The two will battle again in training camp, though neither offers much fantasy help unless Seattle's offense kicks it up a notch (Mare finished with 102 points last season, T-25 in the league). Coutu has a strong leg, was 53-of-66 at Georgia and never missed an extra point.
Coutu, a 2008 seventh-round pick, will battle Olindo Mare for the right to replace the big shoes of Josh Brown, who scored 127 points last season. Mare likely is Seattle’s fallback plan in case Coutu doesn’t produce. Coutu looks like a better bet. Mare struggled last season (10-of-17) and is coming off a hip injury, which is like a pitcher coming off shoulder surgery. Coutu has a strong leg and could easily win the job. He was 53-of-66 at Georgia and never missed an extra point. If Coutu wins the job, he could be this season’s version of Mason Crosby or Nick Folk.
