The Browns have placed Lewis (leg) on season-ending IR, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer.

Lewis has elected to undergo surgery on his fractured left fibula and could miss the remainder of the season, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Lewis is looking at a multiple weeks of recovery time for the broken leg and at the very least, it would seem he would land on short-term injured reserve, which would sideline him for the first eight games of the regular season. The Browns will monitor his recovery over the remainder of training camp before making a decision on his fate. Brandon Jackson and Chris Ogbonnaya are expected to battle for backup duties behind Trent Richardson.
The Browns are trying to determine if Lewis' fractured left fibula is a season-ending injury, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Lewis suffered the gruesome injury during Thursday's preseason game, and it put an end to his bid for the No. 2 running back spot behind Trent Richardson. A late-season return hasn't been ruled out yet, but it would be quite surprising if Lewis isn't place on the IR/designated to return, at the very least. Also known as the "short-term IR," this would allow Lewis to return after Week 8. Given the nature of his injury, it's hard to imagine Lewis being ready at that time. With Montario Hardesty (knee) also sidelined, Brandon Jackson and Chris Ogbonnaya appear to be the Browns' top remaining options in the backfield behind Richardson.
Lewis rushed for 33 yards on five carries Thursday against Detroit before leaving the game with a fractured fibula. He also led the team with four catches and five targets, compiling 15 receiving yards.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

This is a tough break for Lewis, as he was having a great camp and starting to cement himself into the role of the Browns' No. 2 running back. Unfortunately for the team, he was expected to handle kick-return duties as well. No timetable for Lewis' return has been set, but he's out indefinitely, with a PUP list designation a possibility to start the season. Combined with Montario Hardesty's knee scope, his absence presumably opens the door for Brandon Jackson to move up a peg on the Browns' depth chart.
Lewis suffered a broken left fibula in Thursday's preseason game, the Plain Dealer reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Lewis unfortunately was unable to dodge a serious injury and could be out for a significant period of time. With a fracture in the lower leg, it is uncertain what his status will be on returning this season, depending on the nature of the break and how well his rehab progresses. With Lewis out of action and Montario Hardesty expected to miss time at the beginning of the season, the Browns may pursue a free agent back to add depth behind starter Trent Richardson.
Lewis hurt his left ankle during Thursday's preseason game and had to be helped off the field, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.

The man thought to be Lewis' biggest competition for the backup running back job in Cleveland this year, Montario Hardesty, has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will "miss the first two to three regular season games", according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer.

2013

Lewis will battle Montario Hardesty for backup slotting behind clear-cut starter Trent Richardson.

2012

Lewis was given just 23 carries as a rookie last year, with 12 of them coming in Week 17 when the team rested LeSean McCoy. The former fifth-round pick is unknown, but the Eagles view him as McCoy’s backup, so while he may not be a workhorse if McCoy goes down, he’d be the favorite to lead an explosive offense in touches. Lewis offers insurance for McCoy owners and upside for those who take a flier on him regardless.

2011

Competing for third running back role.
