Pettis was released by the Chargers on Friday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis found himself among the first wave of roster cuts, having failed to beat out Dontrelle Inman and Jacoby Jones in the competition at wide receiver. The 27-year-old was waived by the Rams after five games last year, and has yet to surpass 40 catches in any season.

Pettis was productive at times in St. Louis, with his best season coming in 2013 when he hauled in 38 receptions for 399 yards and four touchdowns, but he joins a talented and deep group of receivers in San Diego. Pettis figures to make his biggest impact on special teams, probably returning punts.
The 6-3 Pettis was an early red zone favorite of Sam Bradford's in 2013, catching four TDs in the Rams' first five games, but when Bradford went down for the year Pettis' production evaporated. The Kenny Britt signing could push Pettis out of that role, but it's been a few years since Britt has managed to stay on the field and be reliably productive, and Tavon Austin and Chris Givens are more deep threats than physical targets.
Pettis recorded just 30 catches for 261 yards and four touchdowns last season. However, he has impressed in the offseason, and heads into the preseason as the starter at the third wideout position. While he may not put up strong enough numbers to have fantasy relevance, he should see a fair number of targets in what should be a pass-heavy offense.
Pettis will do his best to try and earn a spot on the club's final roster but the fact that he'll start the season suspended and the additional fact that the club went to great lengths to upgrade the wide receiver position this offseason does not bode well for the 2nd year player out of Boise State.
Taken with the 78th overall pick, the 6-3, 201-pound Pettis could find himself in the Rams receiving mix sooner rather than later. He’s not especially fast, but he has good size, good hands and is polished for a rookie. All the returning veterans in St. Louis are coming off serious injuries, inexperienced and/or ineffective, so there are targets for the taking, and second-year quarterback Sam Bradford should only improve.
