Moore was once considered a rising star with the Raiders. In his first three seasons he averaged 14.5 yards per catch or higher, and caught at least eight passes of 20 or more yards in each season. But 2014 was a disaster - he fell out of favor with the Raiders coaching staff and battled knee and ankle injuries all season. He was limited to just 12 catches for 115 yards and no scores and didn't play an offensive snap in the final eight games of the season.
Moore started off strong with Terrelle Pryor under center, but a shoulder injury and the switch to Matt McGloin slowed him considerably in the second half of the year. The per-play results – 8.1 YPT and 15.1 YPC – were solid, but Moore simply didn’t see enough volume or make enough big plays. This year he'll be paired with quarterback Matt Schaub, who despite being on the downside of his career, is a likely upgrade from last year’s signal callers. At 6-0, 190 and with decent speed and good ball skills, Moore will compete for targets with newly signed James Jones and Rod Streater.
Despite an improvement in catches, yards and touchdowns, Moore took a step back in Year 2, going from 18.7 YPC to 14.5 and 8.1 YPT to 6.5. Part of that is attributable to Oakland's inconsistent offense, and more specifically Carson Palmer's erratic quarterback play, but Moore also dropped nine of his 114 targets and caught only 45 percent of the passes thrown his way (38th of the 39 100-target WR). At 6-0, 195 and with decent speed, Moore relies on athleticism and good ball skills to make plays down the field. The Raiders also targeted him 16 times in the red-zone, and he converted five of those chances into scores. With Darrius Heyward–Bey in Indianapolis, Moore should again be the team's top target, but his production likely will hinge on the development of new quarterback Matt Flynn, something that's hard to predict given Flynn's limited exposure to the league. Moreover, Moore will need to stay healthy – he’s missed four games over his first two seasons.
A fifth-round pick in last year’s draft, Moore rode a strong training camp into a prominent role before foot issues cost him three games late in the season. At 6-0, 195, Moore isn’t particularly big, and while he has good speed, he’s not a true burner. Instead, he’s more of an acrobatic playmaker, in the mold of a younger Chad Johnson, able to adjust to the ball in the air and secure it with solid hands (only one drop). Moore averaged 18.7 YPC and 8.1 YPT on 76 looks, and posted three 100-yard games, two of which (and a 94-yard game) came with Carson Palmer at quarterback. The Raiders have a few talented but inconsistent/injury prone receivers on their roster, so the pecking order among Moore, Darrius Heyward-Bey and Jacoby Ford remains to be seen. But with Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers in the division, chances are the Raiders will have to air it out this year, and there should be some passing game production to go around.
Despite being a fifth-round pick in April's draft, Moore has put himself in position to open the season in the Raiders' receiver rotation.
