Forbath has bounced through seven different organizations since getting his first shot at the NFL in 2011, including stints with the Patriots and Cowboys last year. While he didn't miss a kick with Dallas, going a perfect 10-for-10 each on field goals and extra points, his lack of leg strength and wavering accuracy indicate why he's had trouble hanging onto a job. Since 2016 Forbath has had a higher field-goal percentage (89.9 percent) than extra-point percentage (86.8 percent). The Cowboys brought in Greg Zuerlein this offseason to compete for their kicking job, and in all likelihood Forbath will be trying to latch on with team No. 8 before long.
Forbath missed six field-goal attempts and five PATs last season, cementing his reputation as a mediocre-to-subpar kicker, though volume allowed for a solid fantasy campaign. The Vikings responded by using a fifth-round pick on Daniel Carlson, who converted 91 of 114 field-goal attempts (80.7 percent) and was perfect on 198 PATs at Auburn. Forbath will have a decent chance to catch on elsewhere if he loses the battle.
Forbath was one of only two kickers to hit all of his field-goal attempts last season, though he played only seven games and attempted just one from at least 50 yards. Additionally, his three missed PATs gave him the worst conversion rate of anyone with as many attempts (14). Both numbers should normalize with a full season, but there are few reasons to think Forbath is headed for an elite fantasy year, especially given that he hasn't played a full season since 2014 and made only 10 of 15 field-goal attempts in 11 games during the 2015 season.
Forbath won the starting kicking job this offseason over Connor Barth but he is is hardly guaranteed fantasy success. The Saints appear to be the perfect recipe for a fantasy kicker, as they have a high-octane offense and play a guaranteed minimum of nine games in a dome (eight home games and a visit to Atlanta), but the kicker production just hasn't matched up. The Saints have been in the top-10 in total scoring each of the last three seasons, but their respective kicker production over that span has ranked 28th, 26th and 16th, never accounting for more than 29 percent of their points over that span (for reference, 23 teams had a higher percentage last year). Making matters worse, Forbath has competition this summer because he hit only 66.7 percent of his field goal attempts last season.
The Redskins were poor in the red zone last season, scoring touchdowns on only 47.9 percent of their trips (27th), and while Forbath was accurate on 17-of-18 from inside 40 yards, he just didn't get enough opportunities to make a big fantasy impact. Only twice did he have more than two field-goal attempts in a game, and he missed his lone opportunity from more than 50 yards. Forbath has never been heavily used from that distance (2-for-4 in his three-year career), so it's imperative from a fantasy perspective that he makes plenty of kicks from shorter range. If Robert Griffin III stays healthy, Forbath could get more opportunities, but he still doesn't have a lot of upside.
Forbath appeared in two additional games last season compared to the season prior, but finished with four fewer points. A turnover-prone offense that yielded only 26 PAT attempts over 13 games was a major culprit in the decline, while an early-season groin strain sidelined Forbath for three weeks and possibly factored into his four misfires in the season’s first half. Forbath’s 13-for-13 mark from the field after Week 9 at least provided a silver lining to an otherwise forgettable season. For all their struggles in 2013, the Redskins maintain a nice collection of talent at the skill positions, giving Forbath a shot at recouping some PAT opportunities. He’ll have to fight for his job, however, after the Redskins spent a seventh-round draft choice on Zach Hocker.
Forbath brought some much needed stability to the kicking game after Billy Cundiff was released early last season, hitting 17-of-18 field goal attempts, including 12-of-12 from 40-plus. Forbath's range wasn't tested much, though he made his lone 50-yard attempt. He scored 84 points in 11 games, a 122-point pace over 16 games, which would have ranked 12th in kicker scoring. The Lou Groza award winner in 2009 at UCLA, Forbath will be highly dependent on Robert Griffin's health for his fantasy numbers this season. Bump Forbath down a few spots if Griffin's knee remains an issue heading into the regular season.
College star will need to get healthy before he gets a chance to prove he can kick in the NFL.
