Vick Ballard: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Ballard (knee) is not participating in this week's OTAs, the Indianapolis Star reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Ballard tore his ACL in Week 2 of last season and said in early May he's close to 100 percent. However, we won't be able to gauge his progress this week. Ballard will compete against Ahmad Bradshaw (neck) and Trent Richardson (shoulder) for playing time in training camp.
Ballard, who tore his ACL in Week 2 of last season, says he's close to 100 percent, ESPN reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Ballard will compete against Ahmad Bradshaw (neck) and Trent Richardson (shoulder) for playing time in training camp. Both Ballard and Bradshaw are coming off significant injuries, and Richardson is coming off a season of poor performance. It's not clear at this point how the competition will play out, but at least Ballard looks set to be fully healthy at the start of training camp.
Ballard (torn ACL) believes that he'll be ready for OTAs, George Bremer of the Herald Bulletin reports.

Ballard will miss the rest of the season with a right knee injury he suffered in Thursday's practice, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. He tore the ACL in his right knee in a non-contact injury, the Indianapolis Star adds.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Ahmad Bradshaw will become Indy's primary running back and Donald Brown will now get carries as his backup. It's a big blow for the Colts, as Ballard -- who has been placed on IR -- had become better in pass blocking and was set to be a big part of the offense.
Ballard (knee) was not present for the media portion of Friday's practice, Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star reports.

Colts head coach Chuck Pagano said he is going to try to still get Ahmad Bradshaw carries this week against Miami even with Ballard playing well, the Anderson Herald Bulletin reports. Pagano said that Ballard was "Unbelievable" with his blitz pickups in last week's game, according to Jeremiah Johnson of FOX 59 TV in Indianapolis.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

With Pagano praising Ballard and saying he would "try" to get Bradshaw carries, it sounds like Ballard will start again this week and get the bulk of playing time. It was thought in the preseason that Bradshaw would take over the starting job and bulk of playing time once he showed his foot was healthy after offseason surgery, but Pagano's comments would seem to imply the two will split time with Ballard being the primary option. Still, that could change as Bradshaw shows he's healthy and becomes comfortable with the offense after not playing in the preseason.

2013

Ballard took the lead in the Indianapolis backfield after Donald Brown suffered a knee injury in Week 5 and brought some stability to the role. At 5-10, 217, Ballard combines tough between-the-tackles running with enough wiggle to make defenders miss. While coach Chuck Pagano had named Ballard the No. 1 back in May, Ahmad Bradshaw's signing in June likely relegates Ballard to a timeshare. Moreover, Bradshaw is a tough short-yardage runner and outstanding in blitz pick-up, so he could get most of the third-down and goal-line work. Bradshaw is injury prone, however and not likely to see a full workload, so Ballard should see his share of early-down work while spelling him.

2012

Ballard, a 2012 fifth-round pick will compete with Donald Brown and Delone Carter for the bulk of the Colts' tailback duties. Neither Brown nor Carter were particularly outstanding in their opportunities last season, meaning Ballard could see a fair share of carries during the season with a strong training camp. Nothing about Ballard's game is flashy, but he's decent or better in most areas. He has a feature-back build and does a good job of running low, and helps his odds of playing three downs by showing pretty good hands.
