After catching just six passes in 11 games during his first season in Washington, the 29-year-old Quick is hoping to stick around for another year as the team's No. 5 or No. 6 receiver. He saw more snaps on special teams than offense in 2017.
Quick joins the Redskins after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Rams. A former second-round pick, Quick mostly failed to impress during his time in St. Louis and Los Angeles, but he did make strides with 41 receptions for 564 yards and three touchdowns in 16 contests last season. Moreover, he'll now have consistent, established quarterback passing him the ball, something he's lacked thus far in his career. The veteran figures to play in either the No. 3 or 4 spot with the Redskins, depending on how Josh Doctson -- who missed all of last season with an Achilles injury -- performs.
Quick had an awful season in 2015 while attempting to bounce back from serious shoulder surgery, seeing only 32 targets and hauling in just 10. Assuming he's fully healthy – and by all accounts he should be – Quick should have an opportunity for a significant role, as Kenny Britt has never had more than 90 targets in his career, and Tavon Austin, a hybrid runner-receiver, has never seen more than 87. And for seven healthy games in 2014, Quick averaged a robust 15.0 YPC and 9.6 YPT. At 6-3, 218, with 4.55 40 speed, Quick's physical specs are right on the line for a No. 1 NFL receiver – typically low 4.5s is sufficient for a big wideout to make plays downfield. While the passing offense might struggle with rookie QB Jared Goff learning the ropes, it can't be much worse than what Quick has dealt with during his four-year career.
Through four games, Quick seemed to be on the cusp of a Year 3 breakout before the Rams inexplicably stopped targeting him in Weeks 6 and 7, and a separated shoulder and torn rotator cuff ended his season in Week 8. To that point, Quick had averaged a robust 15 YPC and 9.6 YPT, and managed three touchdowns and two catches of 40-plus yards on only 39 targets. At 6-3, 218, and running a 4.55 40, Quick has enough speed for his size, and he showed himself capable of being a big-play threat last year. Kenny Britt is still around, however, as is Stedman Bailey, who came on late in the year, and former eighth-overall pick Tavon Austin should also see some looks. All four along with tight end Jared Cook will vie for prominence in a passing game in transition as Nick Foles takes over for the departed Sam Bradford. At press time, Quick's shoulder was healing well, and coach Jeff Fisher expressed optimism about having him available before the start of training camp.
The small school athletic freak hasn't yet developed the skills that would allow him to fully harness his talent at the NFL level, but the Rams don't seem inclined to give up on him yet. Quick is the kind of player who could explode if the light switch flicks on for him, but as of yet there's no sign of illumination.
The 33rd player chosen in the 2012 draft, Quick admitted to having trouble with the playbook and the speed of the NFL early on and saw only 27 targets all year as a result. This year, Danny Amendola and Brandon Gibson are gone, and Quick should have a chance to start opposite speedster Chris Givens, with rookie Tavon Austin lining up everywhere. At 6-3, 220 and with good long speed, Quick has the red-zone size and physical presence his smaller, quicker teammates lack. It remains to be seen whether he can adapt to the NFL level in Year 2, but he should get an extended opportunity.
If you want to throw a dart at one Rams receiver, we’d go with the 6-2, 220-pound rookie Quick. While Quick is raw, needs to work on his route running and takes a while to get up to full speed, he’s big, strong and fast enough to get downfield. He’s also got long arms and excellent reach, something that allows him to play even bigger. It remains to be seen how quickly he’ll acquire the polish to be an effective NFL receiver, but the Rams will give him a chance to win a starting job in camp, and he’s got the most upside of their otherwise underwhelming crew.
