Collins (shoulder) will not need surgery, NFL Network's Albert Breer reports.
ANALYSIS
It's good to hear Collins' shoulder isn't too bad of shape, but it remains highly difficult to imagine why any NFL team would sign him with the serious intention of him making a 2011 roster. Retirement shouldn't remain out of the question for the 39-year-old.

Backup quarter back in the last year of his contract. At 37 years old he is on his last legs. He struggled during 2008's preseason to pick up Jim Zorn's west coast offense. Colt Brennan could over take the second string role with a strong preseason.
Surprisingly resigned with the Redskins after long time offensive head coach Al Saunders left during the offseason. Collins filled in the final four games of 2007 for an injured Jason Campbell. He played extremely well throwing five touchdowns and zero interceptions to go along with a 106.4 rating. He will spend 2008 backing Campbell. New Head Coach Jim Zorn brings the West Coast offense, something that Todd Collins has not played in before. If he is called upon during the season do not expect the same type of success as last season.
Third string quarterback who is not guaranteed a job in 2007. He will have to earn his roster spot as there are cheaper alternatives for a position that rarely plays.
Came to the Redskins with long time Offensive guru Al Saunders. He will compete for the number two quarterback job and spend time teaching the nuances of the offense to Mark Brunell and Jason Campbell.
Playing behind Trent Green likely means another year of sitting on the bench for Collins. In his four years as a Chief, Green has never missed a start, meaning Collins, the team's backup quarterback, has seen nothing more than mopup duty since 2001. If Collins is called upon, though, he certainly knows the playbook well enough to execute the Chiefs' high-octane offense and be an effective fantasy player. Just don't count on him seeing a ton of action this season.
Collins has completed an impressive 77-percent of his passes over the last three seasons. Impressive, that is, until one realizes that he's only attempted a total of 22 passes during that span (completing 17). Collins projects as a backup again, so don't be in any hurry to pick him up.
