Brandin Cooks: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

The Saints placed Cooks (thumb) on injured reserve Tuesday, ESPN's Field Yates reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Cooks could have returned to the Saints in late December, but Tuesday's decision means he will not play again this season. He will finish his injury-shortened rookie season with 53 receptions for 550 yards, seven rushes for 73 yards, and four touchdowns. He was a big part of the Saints' offense right out of the gate, and figures to again be a key contributor when he returns to action in 2015.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune relays that Cooks' agent indicates that the wideout should return from his broken thumb in about 4-to-6 weeks.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Previous reports indicated a 2-to-4 week timetable, but this news suggests that a late-season return is a best-case scenario for the wideout. In his absence, Kenny Stills is a prime candidate to see added targets in the Saints' offense, working in tandem with fellow wideout Marques Colston and TE Jimmy Graham.
Cooks suffered a broken thumb Sunday and will be out 2-to-4 weeks, Victor Howell of Cox Sports Television reports.

2014

The Saints traded up to No. 20 to take Cooks, and he could have a significant role right away. Thatís because both of the teamís quick, short-pass-catching options Ė Darren Sproles and Lance Moore Ė have left via free agency, and Cooks appears likely to fill the void. Like Moore and Sproles, Cooks is small (5-10, 189), and heís also very fast Ė his 4.33 40 was tops at the NFL Combine for receivers. While he wonít see much red-zone work, and itís unlikely heíll absorb the entirety of the 140 targets his predecessors saw last year, Cooks should see a decent portion of them if he can overcome the typically steep rookie learning curve.
