Tre Mason: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

The strained right hamstring that Mason suffered in Saturday's preseason action is described as a tweak of a previous hamstring issue, the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

The Rams are downplaying the running back's injury, with coach Jeff Fisher noting of Mason, "I don't know how long that's going to be, but he's a quick healer. Adding, "it appears to be mild at this point, but it would be unlikely that (Mason) would play Thursday. But I think he’ll be fine." Based on that assessment, it appears Mason should be a go for Week 1, but of course the greater question to be answered in terms of his long-range fantasy value rests in when the team plans to turn first-rounder Todd Gurley loose. At this stage, it looks like Gurley, who is bouncing back from a major knee injury, will be eased back in, but those considering Mason are advised to consider him as a short-term solution at running back, given that he will eventually be supplanted by Gurley, if all goes as hoped.
Mason suffered a hamstring injury in Saturday's preseason game which head coach Jeff Fisher described as mild, ESPN reports. Mason had four carries for 12 yards and two receptions for 19 yards before departing.

Mason will be held out of the final preseason game as a result, but it doesn't sound like his Week 1 availability is in question. Still, Mason dealt with a sore hamstring earlier in training camp, so watch his progress. The bigger issue for Mason's fantasy value is the timing of when Todd Gurley will return from a knee injury. Mason will begin the season as the starter, but it may be only a few weeks before Gurley is ready to challenge for the bulk of carries.
Mason (hamstring) had two carries for six yards in Friday's preseason opener against the Raiders.

Mason left practice early Thursday with tightness in his hamstring, Joe Lyons of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Mason is in line for the majority of the Rams' carries right now, so him missing any time would hurt St. Louis. The injury didn't appear serious, but hamstring injuries have a way of persisting.
Though Todd Gurley -- the No. 10 overall pick in the 2015 draft -- will not begin training camp on the Rams' PUP list, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch suggests that Mason is still expected to "get the lion's share" of the team's carries once the regular season kicks off.

2014

At 5-8, 207, Mason's body type and physical, elusive running style have drawn inevitable comps to Ray Rice – though they may not be fair ones. However, the Rams took Mason in the third round after a massive junior campaign at Auburn – 1,816 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns – and he could immediately step into a backup role behind incumbent starter Zac Stacy, possibly turning it into a timeshare as the year goes on. There are some downsides with Mason that could keep him from winning a large role, though. He's not regarded as a very good blocker, didn't show much as a receiver in college, and lacks elite speed – all red flags that mean he's a long way from being considered a three-down back. Most likely, the best he can hope for this year is to be mixed in with Stacy on early downs and at the goal line, where he did so much of his damage in college.
