ANALYSIS
Butler hasn't played in an NFL game since 2020 and originally retired in August 2021. However, the West Alabama product returned in 2022 and signed a two-year contract with the Patriots before suffering an injury during training camp and ultimately getting released. The two-time Super Bowl champion and one-time Pro Bowler will end his career with 406 combined tackles and 17 interceptions across 100 career games in seven seasons.

Butler has had difficulty returning value on the five-year, $61.3 million dollar contract that he signed to join the Titans in 2018. He was beaten deep regularly in his first season with the team, though his performance did improve down the stretch. That improvement continued into 2019, as Butler allowed a 98.4 passer rating when targeted and did not permit a reception longer than 37 yards. However, he was forced to injured reserve with a wrist injury after Week 9. Heading into his third season in Tennessee, Butler will look to put together an entire season of strong performances. If he is unable to do so, his time in Tennessee may end prematurely, as he can be cut with only $4 million of dead cap money after the 2020 campaign.
Butler had a tough time adjusting to his new team in 2018, allowing a 141.8 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks from Weeks 1-9. However, he turned that around in the latter portion of the campaign, holding quarterbacks to a 40.4 passer rating. Heading into his second season with the Titans, Butler appears poised for a more consistent 2019 campaign.
The Patriots still haven't offered any explanation for Butler's benching in January's Super Bowl LII. This didn't prevent the Titans from going all-in on the talented cornerback in free agency, however, considering the team aggressively extended him a five-year, $61 million contract this past March. Now in Tennessee, Butler will form a formidable cornerback tandem with Logan Ryan while being supported with of help from 2017 first-team All-Pro safety Kevin Byard.
Butler, who joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2014, was the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason, but he'll be back for another season with the team after signing his restricted free-agent tender with the team, which is worth $3.91 million for 2017. He's now slated to combine with newcomer Stephon Gilmore to form a quality cornerback combo in the New England secondary. Butler is coming off a 2016 campaign in which he recorded 63 tackles and four picks.
Butler has become a key cog in the Patriots' secondary as he was on the field for a team-high 98.8 percent of the team's regular-season defensive snaps in 2015. Heading into the campaign, Butler was presented with the challenge of replacing Darrelle Revis, and he more than held his own en route to a Pro Bowl nod, recording 67 tackles and two picks. As the 2016 campaign approaches, he'll remain entrenched as the Patriots' starting left cornerback.
While Butler saw the field for just 16.6 percent of the the Patriots' defensive snaps during the 2014 regular season, he emerged as an unlikely Super Bowl hero in February and now has a chance to earn a starting role in the team's secondary following the departure of last season's top duo at the position, Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner.
Trying to stick with the Patriots as a depth cornerback.
