RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2011

Elkington's year-end number is primarily based on his performance at the PGA Championship. If he plays well there, like he did last season when he earned a top-5, then his number season's end looks pretty good. If not, like in 2009 when he missed the cut, then his earnings number is poor. Put simply, don't gamble on a player who has only one decent opportunity to make money all year. Elkington's performance in the four core stats categories was surprisingly strong last season, but a closer look revealed his problem. He ranked 124th on the PGA TOUR in birdies per hole average. Basically, Elkington does exactly what you need to do to get pars, which leads to solid stats in categories such as GIR and putts per green, but it doesn't necessarily mean he's scoring well under par.

2009

Looks and one's memory can be deceiving. Would you believe that Elkington is only 46 years old? What, did he turn pro when he was 12? It seems like he's been playing forever, and well, he has. He started in 1984 and he's had one heck of a career. Now the bad part. Outside of a few exceptions, players his age just don't improve when you get beyond 44-45 years old. He'll manage to get somewhere near his number from last year, but there's little chance he can improve upon it.

2008

Elkington's barometer each season is The Players Championship. If he plays well there, he's in for a good year, if not, he's staring $200k right in the face. With limited upside, and a severe downside, Elkington isn't a good pick for 2008.

2006

Elkington had a couple nice events last year, most notably the run at the PGA Championship, but the tank is running low. The $1.4 million he earned last year is absolutely the high end of what he can make this year. Elkington will always play well at certain events where he's had success in the past, but playing merely well isn't enough when you are looking at spending $1.4 million. There has to be a higher upside.
