CSt. Louis Blues  Minors
March 9, 2016
Phillips was traded to St. Louis in exchange for future considerations Friday, Mark Divver of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
A first-round pick by Minnesota in 2011, Phillips has failed to produce at every level he's played at since turning pro in 2012-13, including a stint with the Atlanta Gladiators of the ECHL this season. The 23-year-old Phillips has yet to appear in an NHL game to this point and is unlikely to make any sort of fantasy impact during his career.

Phillips, a 2011 first-round pick for the Wild, will be given a shot at making the opening night roster, but his chances just aren't that great to break in where he needs to be -- in the top six. Through 76 AHL games last season, he posted a respectable 12 goals and 21 assists. But his own-zone play continues to need work and that will limit his opportunities. Don't get us wrong -- he'll get to the NHL. But he's really a long-term project, both on the ice and in fantasy.
Phillips brings two key things to the Minnesota system -- great offensive abilities, particularly his vision and playmaking, and a tradition of winning. He's a smart, finesse-style center who's been a part of two QMJHL championship teams and a Memorial Cup win (2011). He's not big, but at 6-0, he's not a shrimp, either. He will likely spend most of this season in the AHL, but he could have a few cups of coffee with the big club if/when injuries hit. He should be up permanently in 2013-14.
The Wild used the 28th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft on Phillips, a gifted playmaker from the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL, a junior club. He will only be 19 years old in October, but has the potential in be an impact player for the Wild sooner than later. Consider putting Phillips on your radar in keeper leagues, to start.
