RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Mike Commodore.
We may never know why the Blue Jackets took it upon themselves to ink Commodore to a five-year deal before the 2008-09 season, but they thought the move was enough of a mistake to buy him out after three disappointing campaigns. The Wings signed him in July to bolster their blue-line depth, and given that he'll be a third-pairing option if he sticks on the roster, there's no reason to think his role will lead him to push over the 30-point threshold for the first time in his career.
Coming off a hip injury, Commodore's conditioning was a season-long problem and he played in just 57 games, scoring 11 points. If he's 100%, and doesn't get traded, he'll be top-4 in Columbus once again.
Commodore bounced back after a tough year in Ottawa, scoring 24 points and adding 100 PIMs with a plus-11 rating in 81 games as part of the Blue Jackets' top defensive pairing.
Commodore, a rock-solid physical defenseman, joins the Blue Jackets as a free agent and will try for his fourth straight 100+ PIM season.
Will probably be paired with Bret Hedican, and should see an opportunity to improve slightly over last year's numbers. His scoring probably isn't enough to warrant a fantasy draft choice unless your draft is plenty deep and includes PIM as a category.
Commodore has emerged as the Hurricanes' main enforcer, but has learned not to take foolish penalties. He doesn't score on the power play, and will likely not put up significant fantasy numbers. The principal fantasy question is whether he'll accumulate enough penalty minutes to justify a roster slot.
Commodore is a big, strong blueliner who will intimidate many a streaking forward, but none of your fantasy opponents. He isn't even a goon, in case your league rewards PIM. Look elsewhere for fantasy productivity.
