At 32 years old, Ellis’ best years are most likely behind him, but the undrafted forward is happy to play a depth role for the Sabres. Ellis has spent the majority of his career shuffling between the AHL and NHL, and on a team like the Sabres that lacks veteran leadership, Ellis has a chance to play a regular role. In 50 games with the Sabres last year, Ellis scored six points, and similar production can be expected for the 2014-15 season.
After a full season with the big club in 2011-12, Ellis played just six games last season before being sent to AHL Rochester, where he posted 12 points in 32 games. He signed a two-year, two-way deal in the offseason and will once again have a chance to break camp with the Sabres. However, he’s more likely slated to remain team captain in Rochester in a mentoring role for the team’s younger talent.
Ellis spent the entire season with the Sabres in '11-12 and has become a mainstay at the bottom end of the roster. He managed eight points in 60 games, so he doesn't hold much relevance in most fantasy leagues. Look for him to continue playing a depth role in Buffalo, but he'd do well to eclipse the career-high 13 points he set in '09-10.
Ellis re-upped with the Sabres after his best year as a pro in 2010-11. While Ellis had to settle for a two-way contract, the Sabres will likely rely on him to center the fourth line in Buffalo in 2011-12. In 14 games wit the Sabres last year, Ellis went without a point, but that really isn't his game. He's a grinder who will definitely see a lot of time in Buffalo, even if he does have to shuttle back-and-forth between Rochester and Buffalo.
Last season Ellis took on a part-time role as a fourth-liner for the Sabres, lighting up the lamp 7 times in 40 games. Although he is in good favor with coach Lindy Ruff, Ellis could face some competition for his job from prospects Tim Kennedy and Nathan Gerbe. He is a depth player at best and offers little fantasy value.
Ellis finished the season with the Kings after playing 35 games with Detroit. He's nothing more than a role player with the Kings and offers no fantasy upside.
Ellis registered 49 points (26 goals and 23 assists) in 65 games last season with Grand Rapids of the AHL. He also played in 16 games with Detroit, seeing limited ice and not scoring a point. Obviously he's still a project at this juncture.
