RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Steve Kampfer.
A fourth-round pick back in 2007, Kampfer has struggled to find regular ice time throughout his NHL career. While splitting time last season between AHL San Antonio and the Panthers, Kampfer reached double-digit goals for the first time in his career, scoring eight in 42 games with San Antonio and adding two more with the Panthers in 25 games. He ended up with 19 points in the AHL and four in the NHL. A strong crop of young defenseman are coming up the pipeline for the Panthers, but the team's willingness to sign Kampfer to a two-year contract extension last spring demonstrates their commitment to him as an NHL regular. He'll likely function as a sixth or seventh defenseman this season.
Kampfer, who appeared in 38 games with the Bruins this past season -- recording five goals and 10 points -- displayed promise as a puck-moving defenseman before seeing his play taper off somewhat. He has a chance to break camp with the big club given his NHL experience and solid skill-set and at worst he'd be one of the team's first in season blue-line callups.
Kampfer, taken by the Ducks in the fourth round of the 2007 draft (93rd overall) caught the Bruins eye at the trade dealine last spring. He adds some blue line depth to the organization and is slated to join the B's AHL affiliate in Providence, where he'll try to work his way up the ranks.
