RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Stu Bickel.
The Wild brought in Bickel for the experience he can offer the NHL squad as the team attempts to lean on the young incoming players this season. Bickel can provide some penalty minutes, but he is unlikely to be used consistently and unlikely to get many minutes when he is given the call up from the AHL.
Bickel, a 26-year-old undrafted free agent, heads into camp with one-year remaining on his contract. The defenseman has become more known for his muscle and willingness to get scrappy from the blue line than anything else. With the organization using several draft picks (Dylan McIlrath, Ryan Graves) in the past few seasons on Ds of his ilk, it's likely Bickel is playing his last season on Broadway. Unless you need a back-up bruiser, he should not be on either keeper or annual re-draft radars as he is not likely to change pace from the nine assists and 157 penalty minutes through 67 career games with the Rangers.
The 6-4 defenseman will return to the Rangers after signing a two-year, $1.5 million deal this offseason. With Brandon Prust headed to the Montreal Canadiens, Bickel will play a larger role as an enforcer for the Blueshirts in 2012-13. He totaled 108 penalty minutes last season, and the bulk of his fantasy worth will come in leagues that count minutes in the box since he is not relied to score much, as evidenced by his no goals and nine assist stat line one season earlier.
