Arnason comes to New York hoping to resurect a career that seems to be on its last legs. He'll likely be sent to the AHL to begin the season, but he'll likely get an opportunity sometime early in the season to show he still has what it takes to be a productive NHLer, though that may not include being relevant for fantasy owners.
With the return of Joe Sakic to the Avs' lineup for one more year, Arnason slots no higher than the team's #3 center this season. Last year, Arnason did his best work in late January - early February when the team was racked by injuries and he was playing more of a prominent role. You should assume that won't be the case this year and that Arnason returns to his usual unreliable self.
Arnason will be the third line center in Colorado.
His 2005-06 season began in fairly promising fashion (41 points in 60 games for Chicago), but his production dropped off sharply after he was traded to Ottawa. Arnason turned in only four assists in 19 games as a Senator. He was routinely a healthy scratch during the playoffs. Despite these struggles, Arnason is a sleeper pick in Colorado this season. Head coach Joel Quenneville says that Arnason could play as high as the second-line center position, and will see some time on the power play. The Avalanche have a lot of scoring to replace, after losing Alex Tanguay and Rob Blake during the offseason, and they're counting on Arnason to help fill that void.
Arnason led the team in scoring in 2003-04. Now, that the Hawks have put money into the club, it will be time to score because the Hawks should have something to play for. Arnason scored 22 goals and 33 assists in 2003-04, but the Hawks were in the shadow of everybody. Arnason had his run-ins with former head coach Brian Sutter and thrived under new current Hawks head man Trent Yawney while at Norfolk.
