RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Derek Meech.
Meech's greatest asset to the Wings is versatility, but he's a bit of a spare part in the organization right now. After clearing waivers in September, he'll almost certainly open the year with Grand Rapids (AHL) while awaiting another opportunity to collect limited minutes in Detroit.
Meech's versatility helped him see time in the lineup last season (41 games). He moved up to forward when injuries left head coach Mike Babcock searching for fresh legs. If Meech eventually is placed on waivers or traded, he could find a regular spot elsewhere much like Kyle Quincey did last season with Los Angeles, but Meech isn't likely to have much of an offensive role as a spare part in Detroit.
On any other club, Meech would be a shoe-in for third-pairing work and regular ice time, but Detroit's blue-line depth has him on the short list of potential defenseman to be traded during training camp by general manager Ken Holland. Meech is skilled enough to contribute at the offensive end, but as long as he's in Detroit, the lack of opportunity will curb his upside.
Meech has made the Red Wings out of training camp as an extra defensemen, but he'll probably be a healthy scratch or a spare part on most nights.
