Cherepanov still has one year left on his contract with Omsk Avangard, so it will be at least another season before he joins the Rangers. He is the Rangers top prospect and has tremendous upside. Those of you in keeper leagues will want to keep an eye on Cherepanov.
Cherepanov was a top-five talent, whom fell to the 17th pick due to his contract status and questions revolving his worth ethic. Truly the classic high-risk, high reward player if there was ever a perfect candidate. One thing is certain however, this kid is one talented hockey player and if he gets everything together can be a force on the NHL level. Until then, the Rangers are fine with him developing overseas; he has an active two year deal with Avangard (Omsk).
Cherepanov hitched a ride on a meteor this past season and rode it all the way to the near the top of the draft ratings for 2007. He was utterly spectacular at the 2007 World Junior Championships and was named top forward for his efforts. But like a lot of talented young players, he doesn't always bring his "A" game to the rink night in and night out. When he's "on", Cherry can fight off even the heaviest of coverage to find twine. When he's not, he looks as bored as Alexei Kovalev in a Canadiens jersey. Fantasy owners should note this kid beat Pavel Bure's Russian Super League record for goals by a rookie this past season and his point total as a rook was higher than three other pretty spectacular guys named Malkin, Ovechkin and Kovalchuk. His fantasy potential is as high as they come; getting him out of Russia will be a test of faith for his club.
