A sixth-round selection from the 2005 draft, Blanchard has yet to crack an NHL roster. Expect much of the same in 2012-2013. He had 21 points and 103 penalty minutes in the AHL last season with Charlotte.
Blanchard, Carolina’s sixth-round draft selection in 2005, has yet to skate on NHL ice. Instead, he’s spent the past six seasons developing with AHL Albany/Charlotte, the team’s minor league affiliate. In 2010-11, the bruising forward accumulated 18 points (8 G, 10 A) and 101 penalty minutes in 72 games. He’s best viewed as organizational depth at this point in his professional career.
Blanchard has fit in comfortably with Albany of the AHL. Yet, not so relaxed was anyone involved on the other side of Blanchard's 171 penalty minutes last season. Though he may never become more than a third- or fourth-line skater in the NHL, Blanchard is a decent scorer and set-up man. With Rod Brind'Amour retired and Ray Whitney with the Coyotoes, there might not be a better time than the 2010-11 season for Carolina's young prospects to prove their worth. Certainly, Blanchard is in that mix.
Blanchard racked up 130 PIMs for Albany of the AHL in 2008-09. However, he needs to add more dimensions to his game before he can contend for the NHL.
The 21-year-old isn't going to break through onto the Hurricanes' roster any time soon. Probably at least another year (more likely two) in the AHL, and he won't be the first injury callup.
Blanchard is a long way away from making an impact at the NHL level. We expect a good deal of minor league seasoning.
