RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Theo Peckham.
Peckham is never going to be mistaken for Paul Coffey. He's a physical defender with a limited offensive game, but his physcial game took a hit last season and a concussion ended his campaign prematurely. If he can't play the body with reckless abandon this season, Peckham's NHL future in Edmonton could be coming to an end.
Peckham only had three goals and 13 points in 71 games for the Oilers last season but does provide necessary toughness and protection for his teammates as his 198 PIMs will attest to. Still, the Oilers brought in other players this offseason who can provide the same physicality but with a bit more offensive, which may force Peckham to the press box a bit more than he would like.
This could finally be the season that Peckham gets a legitimate chance to make the team out of camp. The Oilers only have three spots on defense locked up and Peckham could claim one of the open spots with a strong camp.
Peckham's only real value comes in leagues which reward time spent in the sin bin. He had 43 PIMs in nine games in his previous stint with the Oilers. He will start the season in Springfield once again and be a call up when injuries hit the defensive corps.
Sort of an old school defenseman who does what is needed to get the job done. Can drop the gloves when needed, tough in front of the net, and can get the puck out of the zone. Might see some time with the Oilers as an injury replacement but still a year away from contending for a full-time job.
Peckham is a physical blue liner with a mean streak. While he can rack up the pims with the best of them, he's not your typical "goon" as he isn't a detriment to the team when on the ice. He still has some development and maturation to go through, so he's a few years away.
