Whitmore saw his first ever NHL action ahead of the holidays, averaging 12:31 a game in two contests, but the Sabres got some healthy veterans back Monday and there's no need for them to keep Whitmore around for now.

Whitmore has to be elated at Buffalo's new AHL affiliation with Rochester. The native of Rochester inked a one-year deal with the Sabres in July, and will likely spend 2011-12 in his hometown.

Whitmore projects as a career minor-league player. The Bowling Green State product has 56 points (29 G, 27 A) in 155 games in Portland. The Sabres offered him a one-year contract in the summer, and he will hope to have a breakout season in Portland, or he may be looking for elsewhere for a team after this season.

Whitmore scored 27 goals and added 10 assists in 37 games last season for Bowling Green State University. He's a little undersized (5-11, 185) and not a top prospect. Whitmore likely needs at least a couple years of AHL seasoning.
