RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Matt Halischuk.
Halischuk missed an extended period of time last season after fracturing his forearm, but appears to be fully recovered and ready to go for 2014-15. Considering that he only posted five goals and five assists in the 46 games he played in, the winger will probably remain a fourth line player for the foreseeable future. Expect him to sit out some nights, though, as he platoons with T.J. Galiardi, Chris Thorburn, Eric Tangradi and Anthony Peluso for the two spots flanking Jim Slater. If he is able to carve out a regular roster spot, he could be a useful waiver claim in deeper leagues during the season.
Halischuk took a major step forward last season, recording a career-high 28 points in 73 games. This is quite remarkable, considering he spent the majority of last season in a fourth-line checking role. Halischuk is a dependable two-way player and may have the talent to play a second-line position someday, but the Preds simply have too much depth on their forward lines for him to have much of a shot.
Halischuk was acquired from New Jersey as part of the Jason Arnott trade. Halischuk has battled injuries the last few seasons and probably projects more as a third- or fourth-line winger because of his lack of offensive potential. He does bring a tough, physical style though. He will likely open the season in the AHL with the Milwaukee Admirals.
A promising forward that can do some of the team's dirty work, Halischuk looked strong in 2009 training camp, but likely will spend most of the season in Lowell.
