RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Mike Murphy.
Murphy shined last season at Charlotte (AHL), going 21-11-3 with a 2.53 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage. Even though Cam Ward is firmly entrenched as Carolina's No. 1 goaltender, the Hurricanes do have a promising prospect waiting in the wings in Murphy.
With Justin Peters now up in the NHL, Murphy moves up the ladder as arguably the best goalie prospect in the Hurricanes organization. A diminutive Murphy dazzled with the Belleville Bulls in the OHL by posting back-to-back awards for Goaltender of the Year, in 2008 and 2009. Look for Murphy to iron out any flaws in his game with extended time in the AHL during the upcoming season.
Murphy dominated the OHL, winning OHL Goaltender of the Year honors for the 2007-08 season. He's a small goalie who plays a bigger game and is highly touted among goalie prospects. While he's still a few years away from the NHL, fighting for the No.1 goalie job in Albany of the AHL is Murphy's next hurdle en route to a professional career.
