RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Jason Missiaen.
Missiaen is probably the first goalie organizational brass would mention when the team's looks beyond Henrik Lundqvist's newly extended contract. At 6-foot-8, 206-pounds, the 24-year-old dressed at three different levels of hockey last year, including a handful of NHL appearances as backup last season. Those games were peppered in between his travels and a 6-12-1 record (.893 save-percentages) through 19 combined games with ECHL Greenville and AHL Hartford. While dynasty owners wouldn’t hurt themselves keeping an eye on Missiaen's progress this season, annual re-drafters will have no need for the Chatham, Ontario native this season.
Missiaen is a monstrous (6-8), former Montreal draft pick who is making his way up the Rangers' organizational pipeline and fast. He's one of four backstops (including Cam Talbot, Jeff Malcom and Scott Stajcer) competing for a roster spot with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL and Missiaen's numbers might suggest he has a slight edge over his competitors. Since signing with the Rangers as a free agent in March 2011, the 23-year-old has posted a combined record 36-22-5 and five shutouts through 70 games in the ECHL and AHL. For now, he'll bide his time in the minors with Henrik Lundqvist and Martin Biron ahead of him at the NHL level. But with Lundqvist's contract expiring at the end of the season and Biron's advancing age, keeper league owners should continue to monitor his progress with Hartford.
The towering 6'8" Missiaen is very much a prospect at this stage in his young career. The 21-year-old won't be seeing any action with the Blueshirts this year. Fantasy owners can look elsewhere.
