Roberts announced on Friday that he will retire and not play another game this season, TSN.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite hopes to retire at the end of the season, Roberts made the decision to cut out early after being placed on waivers by the Lightning. The 42-year-old veteran ends his career with 438 goals and 472 assists as well as a Stanley Cup with the 1989 Flames.

Roberts is a fitness freak and frankly, that's probably the only reason this 42-year-old is still playing. He missed over half of last season with a broken leg but is healthy and raring to go. He was brought to Tampa Bay for his leadership and discipline but he's all but useless in the fantasy arena. Go ahead and enjoy watching him throw his body around and get in the face of opponents and refs. Just don't draft him.
Roberts has put offseason incidents behind him and says he ready to go ahead full-speed as a member of the Panthers. He mustered 40 points in 58 games last season and is probably due for 50 points this season, if he can stay healthy.
Roberts bounced back from a season more-or-less lost to injury and put up a 28/20/48 in 2003-04. Now at 39 years old, Roberts will be in new territory with the Panthers - and not just geographically. Unlike the geriatric Maple Leafs, Florida will depend on Roberts for leadership, not necessarily production. Consider him a yellow light, good for about 20/20/40.
