Cahill announced Tuesday that Shanghai Shenhua are terminating his contract, as he is not in the plans for the 2016 season.

Cahill signed a new contract with the club in November, so it's a bit surprising they are moving on already. The Chinese club has been spending massively of late, bringing on a number of international players, and the recent agreement to bring on Obafemi Martins from the Seattle Sounders meant the club had to open up an international player spot on their roster. Cahill said he would announce within the week what his next step would be.

Cahill scored in the 21st minute of Australia's 2-3 loss to Netherlands in their second match of the World Cup on Wednesday. However, he also picked up his second yellow card in as many games, which means he will not be eligible to face Spain.

Cahill's goal was a remarkable score that saw him volley a moon ball sent to him from defender Ryan McGowan. It was Cahill's second goal of the World Cup, but Australia was eliminated from knockout round contention with the loss. Cahill now has five goals in eight career World Cup matches.

Cahill knocked in a header in the 35th minute of Australia's 1-3 loss to Chile in their opening World Cup match Friday.

Cahill is the lone forward for the Australians and will likely be one of their only source of goals. The score Friday was classic Cahill, although he could find it more difficult to match it against Spain and Netherlands.
