Bocanegra announced Thursday that he will retire at the end of the MLS season, ESPN FC reports.

The former U.S. national team captain has spent 15 years in professional soccer, while appearing in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. His 110 national team appearances made him the 12th player in history with at least 100 caps for the U.S.

Bocanegra will be in the USA's starting 11 for Saturday's World Cup opener against England, according to Steven Goff of The Washington Post.

The only question is, who else takes the field on the back line for Bob Bradley's bunch? Does Boca play in the middle with Onyewu? Does he play on the left or right with Onyewu and Demerit in the middle? Bradley is being tight lipped about the rest of the lineup.

Bocanegra completely sold out and threw himself into a diving header in traffic to give the USA the 2-1 win over Honduras in World Cup Qualifying on Saturday.

Boca knows no other way when he's in on corners and set pieces, and he threw his head in where it could have been easily kicked, after a scramble in the box. A huge three points come back from Chicago with team USA.

Bocanegra's header off of a beautifully taken DeMarcus Beasly corner found the back of the Guatemalan net in the 69th minute of a brutally physical World Cup Qualifier to give the USA the 1-0 win.

Bocanegra's goal was enormous, but his leadership along with Oguchi Onyewu on the back-line was every bit as important as his goal was in what was an ugly, chippy game.
