Van Ginkel (knee) appeared in an U-21 game Friday, his first appearance since suffering a torn ACL back in September, Goal.com reports.

Manager Jose Mourinho said in January that van Ginkel may be able to play for the U-21 side by the end of March or beginning of April, so he appears to be a little ahead of schedule. It's unclear how long he'll need on the lower levels to get back to full fitness, which means he could still miss the rest of the current Premier League season.

Manager Jose Mourinho said Tuesday that van Ginkel (knee) may be able to play for Chelsea's U-21 side by the end of March or beginning of April.

Van Ginkel has been out since undergoing knee surgery to repair a torn ACL at the end of September. It was initially believed that the midfielder would miss the entire season, although a return late in March to the U-21 side doesn't necessarily mean he'll see late-season Premier League action.

Van Ginkel signed a five-year contract with Chelsea on Friday, transferring from Vitesse Arnhem in Holland.

Van Ginkel was named the Dutch Talent of the Year last season and has been a consistent performer for the Dutch U-21 squad. Despite his young age, he could be a nice piece of the Chelsea puzzle this season under new manager Jose Mourinho.

Van Ginkel could be on the move to Chelsea after the club agreed to a fee with Vitesse Arnhem, Sky Sports reports.

Van Ginkel scored eight league goals last season and won the Dutch Young Player of the Year Award. The transfer fee is reportedly in the 8 million range but the move is still pending a medical exam and agreement of personal terms.
