Boateng has returned to AC Milan after terminating his deal with Schalke, Football Italia reports.

This doesn't make much sense as there really is no place for Boateng on this roster.

Schalke terminated Boateng's contract Monday, the BBC reports.

The move is quite surprising given that Schalke still have two matches left in the season and continue to fight for a Europa League spot. Boateng has recently been linked with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer, and while he'll likely take a small break, he could join as soon as this summer.

Boateng was suspended indefinitely by the Ghana FA on Thursday, and he will not compete against Portugal in their final group stage match, ESPN FC reports.

The FA said in the announcement that Boateng made insulting remarks at coach Kwesi Appiah during the team's training session, and it was clearly bad enough to send him home in a vital game against Portugal. Ghana need a win to have any shot at the knockout stage.

Boateng suffered injuries to his ribs, back and neck after being attacked in Kaarst, Germany on Christmas Day, according to Goal.com.

The injuries were considered minor and there is now an open criminal investigation. Boateng joined Schalke this past summer and has been a solid contributor for them. While he was treated for the numerous injuries, it doesn't appear that he'll miss any matches, with Schalke next playing January 26 against Hamburg.

Boateng scored in the 64th and 85th minutes of Schalke's 3-1 win over Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Boateng's first goal snapped a five-game goalless streak in all competitions and he now has five scores on the year in Bundesliga play. He'll look to keep it going against Frankfurt on November 23 after the international break.

Boateng is in Munich to receive "intense conservative treatment" on his left knee, according to Bundesliga.com.

Boateng suffered the injury during last week's 4-1 win over FC Augsburg and will remain in Munich to undergo further treatments until at least Friday. He will not participate in next Tuesday's World Cup qualifying playoff against Egypt, although it's possible that he can return for Schalke's next Bundesliga match, which comes October 19 against Eintracht Braunschweig. Another scenario has him sitting that match out so that he's ready to face Chelsea in a Champions League group stage match three days later.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Boateng will not play in Ghana's World Cup qualifier against Egypt on October 15, as he will stay in Germany to have his knee examined, Goal.com rpeorts.

Boateng has scored in back-to-back Bundesliga matches for Schalke and fantasy owners are likely fine with the decision to not play for Ghana during the international break. He'll look to continue his goal streak on October 19 when the Bundesliga schedule starts up again versus TSV Eintracht Braunschweig.

Boateng scored from the spot in the 16th minute during Saturday's 4-1 win over FC Augsburg.

Boateng's opportunity came after Ragnar Klavan was sent off for taking down Adam Szalai in the box, recording this third goal since joining Schalke this summer. Next up on the Bundesliga schedule is an October 19 matchup against TSV Eintracht Braunschweig after the international break.
