Martinez is believed to be close to joining Atletico Madrid after they agreed to pay the 35 million release clause in his contract with FC Porto, ESPN FC reports.

Martinez was heavily linked with AC Milan last month, while Arsenal were also potential landing spots, but Atletico were the only club to pony up the sizable release clause. He has a big opportunity to start right away after Mario Mandzukic left to join Juventus. Martinez had 21 league goals in 30 appearances last season, while also netting seven times in eight Champions League matches.
