Friedel signed a one-year contract extension Monday, and he will also become a club ambassador in the United States, the club's official web site reports.

Friedel currently backs up Hugo Lloris and doesn't figure to get much playing time next season; certainly not in Premier League games.

Friedel, who got the start in Sunday's Premier League match against Newcastle for the injured Hugo Lloris (head), made three saves but allowed a 13th minute goal to Loic Remy, which turned out to be the game winner in a 1-0 Newcastle win.

Lloris was unavailable for Sunday's match after club doctors did not clear him to play, a curious decision given that they cleared him to play immediately after falling unconscious due to a collision with Everton's Romelu Lukaku last weekend. It's unclear how much time Lloris will miss given the uncertainty with head injuries, but if he's unavailable after the international break, Friedel would be the expected replacement.

This comes in the wake of the major signing of French international keeper Hugo Lloris from French giant Lyon. While Friedel is still very capable, as Tottenham make a push to win more trophies, he may be seeing a timeshare. Feel free to start him this week as Friedel can still put up a clean sheet, even at the ripe age of 41.

Friedel was the man of the match in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Norwich.

Friedel made a big statement just one day after Spurs went out and spent big money on French goalkeeper Huge Lloris. The American keeper was sensational, and may not quite be dead yet.
